Travel Journalling - Part 4

Elevating Your Travel Journal Through Art and Scrapbooking

Hey there, fellow wanderer! Ready to dive into a world where travel memories aren't just words on paper, but vibrant expressions of your creative soul? Let's embark on a journey that takes your travel journalling game up a notch, combining the power of words with the magic of art and scrapbooking. Trust me, this is the adventure you won't want to miss!

A Canvas Beyond Words

Imagine strolling through the well-trodden streets of a charming little town, the aroma of fresh pastries lingering in the air. Sure, you could jot down the name of the street, but what if you could also capture the essence of that moment with a watercolour sketch? Art in your travel journal isn't about being a professional painter; it's about recording the emotions and colours of your experience.

Adding Art to the Mix

Here's the secret: art gives your travel memories a new dimension. You don't need to be the next Picasso; a simple sketch or a splash of colour can turn your journal into a visual storytelling masterpiece. Think about it – your words describe the taste of that local delicacy, but a sketch of it on the same page? It's like bringing that dish to life all over again. If you are unsure about sketching it then take a photo of it and pop it on the page but also include some simple sketches of other things on the table or in the café to draw in even more memories.

Why Stop at Photos?

We all love a good photo, but let's talk about taking it to the next level. Scrapbooking is the ace up your sleeve when it comes to adding layers of depth to your travel journal. Those entrance tickets to that breathtaking museum, the seashell you picked up from that secluded beach, the postcards you collected from every city – they all have stories to tell. Arrange them in your journal alongside your words and art, and you've got yourself a visual time capsule.

The Scrapbooking Spell

Imagine flipping through your travel journal and stumbling upon a pressed flower from the beautiful lake you visited. Instantly, you're transported back to that moment, feeling the nostalgia and wonder all over again. That's the magic of scrapbooking – it's like weaving the physical mementos of your journey into the pages of your journal.

Art and Memories: A Powerful Duo

You might be wondering, "Can my artistic attempts really capture the essence of my journey?" Absolutely! Studies show that creating art can enhance memory retention and improve cognitive abilities. So, when you sketch that serene lakeside view or paint the bustling market scene, you're not just creating art; you're engraving that memory deeper into your mind.

Let Your Creative Spirit Soar

Maybe you've never considered yourself an artist, and that's okay. Travel journalling is all about embracing your unique creativity. Don't stress over perfection; embrace the imperfections that make your journal authentically yours. Whether it's a quick doodle or a meticulously shaded masterpiece, your art carries the energy of the moment you're capturing. It is uniquely you.

A Symphony of Colours and Textures

Close your eyes and think back to that vibrant weekend market you explored. The colourful textiles, the aroma of delicious food, the chatter of the crowd – can words alone do justice to that sensory overload? Pair your written descriptions with a collage of fabric scraps, a sprinkle of glitter, or a smudge of sand. Suddenly, your journal doesn't just tell the story; it becomes a multi-sensory experience.

The Power of Reflection

Artistic journalling isn't just about aesthetics; it's also a gateway to self-reflection. As you sit down to sketch or glue in a memento, you'll find yourself reflecting on the details that made that moment special. What caught your eye? What emotions did you experience? These reflections deepen your connection with your experiences and offer insights into your personal growth. Don’t forget to write these memories down.

Legacy in the Making

Imagine your great-grandchildren leafing through your travel journal decades from now. They won't just be reading your words; they'll be marvelling at your sketches, feeling the textures of the memorabilia you lovingly preserved. Art and scrapbooking breathe life into your memories, turning them into an heirloom that tells the story of your adventures in a language that transcends time.

Time to Embark on Your Creative Journey

So, as you set out on your next journey, consider packing alongside your travel essentials a set of watercolours, a sketchbook, and a pouch for collecting treasures. Let your travel journal become a canvas where words, colours, and memories meld into something truly extraordinary. Embrace the world of artistic journalling and scrapbooking, and you'll not only capture your travels – you'll create a symphony of experiences that will resonate in your heart for years to come. Happy journalling, artistry, and storytelling! 🎨✈️

The Power of Recording Memories

On our last trip to Tassie to visit my sister I just sketched. We have been there so many times that we didn’t do any sightseeing this time and just hung around her property relaxing. It was nice sitting there on her deck and relaxing with a glass of wine, pencil in hand and my sketchbook ready to sketch the surrounding views. In just under 4 weeks, we are off on a family holiday to Queenstown, New Zealand. We are going with my son, his wife and our 2 grandchildren. This will be the grandkids first time in the snow, so we are really looking forward to it. It will be my first time in New Zealand so that is also exciting. New Zealand is such a beautiful place I just know I will be taking hundreds of photos. I also am really looking forward to sketching my own interpretation of these scenes. Unlike most other people, over the last couple of months I haven’t been planning what clothes to take or what must see tourist attractions to visit …. I have been planning and creating my travel journal and deciding what supplies to take. At this point in time, I have my journal and supplies all packed and ready to go. But I haven’t got one item of clothing organised. LOL I have spent weeks “auditioning” which of my watercolour paints to take. (At one point my hubby asked me if there was a prize for the supplies that won because I had literally spent hours swatching out colours and deciding which best suited the “theme” of our destination – cheeky bugger.) I didn’t want to take my entire range of watercolours as that only adds to the procrastination of creating art – do I use ultramarine blue or cobalt blue…. which shade of green should this be…. should I use burnt umber or burnt sienna? If you have limited supplies, you make do with what you have and just go for it. Well, that is what I have found over the years anyway. I have hand-made my travel journal using my favourite size format for creating on the go. It has a mixture of scrapbooking papers (for photos) and good quality watercolour paper for creating art. I will go into more detail on creating my travel journal and the final selection of supplies to take in my next post. But for now, here is a picture of the first page of my travel journal and some of the “winning” supplies. It’s nice to not have a completely blank journal to dive into when travelling. My next job is to pack all these so they are as portable as possible… Ensure that you register on my website or follow me on Facebook to stay updated on the real-time creation of my travel journal.
