Creating Your Travel Journal

Travelling is a delightful experience that enriches our lives with unforgettable moments and cherished memories. One way to capture and relive those moments is by creating a travel journal. In this blog post, we will explore the steps to plan and craft your own travel journal, making it a unique and meaningful keepsake of your adventures.

Planning Your Journal

Check out Pinterest board for examples I have collected - Travel Journals.

Choose Your Binding Method

The first decision you need to make when planning your travel journal is selecting the binding method. Your choice will not only affect the journal's aesthetics but also its practicality. Here are three popular options:

Ring Bound: A ring-bound journal allows you to easily add or remove pages. It's a flexible choice, perfect for those who want to keep their journal organised and versatile.

Stitched: Stitched journals have a timeless and elegant appearance. They provide a cohesive and durable binding, ensuring your journal stays intact throughout your journey.

Multiple Insert Journal: This unique style combines multiple booklets bound together, creating a dynamic and visually captivating journal. Each booklet can represent different aspects of your travels, such as destinations or themes.

Purchased Journal: sometimes you just don’t have enough time to make your own journal. That’s fine, just go on the hunt for a journal that will fulfill your travel needs. One of my favourite journals is from Scribbles That Matter. It is a dotted journal (commonly used for Bullet Journalling) that can handle water, inks, pens and more without falling apart or bleeding through to the back of the page. Another one I have used and like is from Strathmore. This is a mixed media art journal and can be bought in various sizes and types of paper. Visit your favourite bookstore or Amazon and you will find dozens of options.

Choose Your Finished Journal Size

Consider the dimensions of your journal, including width and height. Make sure to account for the space needed for the chosen binding method. The size should be practical for carrying during your travels while providing enough room for your creative expressions.

Determine the Page Size

The page size within your journal is another essential consideration. Similar to the journal's overall size, you must accommodate the binding method. Keep in mind that the page size should be comfortable for writing, sketching, or pasting mementos.

Determine the Colours You Will Use/Include

Colours can evoke emotions and set the tone for your travel journal. Consider the colour palette that resonates with your travel experiences. Will you opt for vibrant and lively hues, serene pastels, or earthy and rustic tones? Hiking in the mountains = greens, browns, blues (sky/water). Whereas a snow skiing holiday would be whites, greys & blues….

Your choice of colours will infuse your journal with a unique personality.

Once you've made these important decisions, record all these details – it will help you keep on track and focused. Having a clear plan in place will serve as a roadmap for the creative process ahead.

Crafting a Handmade Journal

If you're looking for a truly personalised travel journal, consider making one from scratch. Here are the supplies you'll need:

Supplies Needed:

Covers: Start with chipboard or thick cardstock for the covers. These materials provide durability and a sturdy foundation for your journal.

Decoration: Enhance the covers with decorative paper that reflects your travel theme. This is your chance to make the journal uniquely yours.

Insert Pages: You'll need a variety of pages to fill your journal. Use cardstock, heavy-weight papers in coordinating colours, scrapbook paper, and even watercolour paper if you plan to draw or paint in your journal.

Binding: Choose a binding method that aligns with your initial decision. It could be stitched, spiral bound, or ring bound using book rings like this one.

Insert Pages: Cardstock and Heavy-Weight Papers: These pages provide a sturdy base for gluing or attaching photos and other memorabilia.

Scrapbook Paper: Include scrapbook paper in coordinating colours to add flair to your pages.

Watercolour Paper: If you have artistic inclinations, having watercolour paper in your journal will allow you to paint scenes or impressions from your travels.

Embellishments

Make your travel journal visually captivating with a variety of embellishments. While you don't need to use all of them, select those that align with your theme and style:

  • Rub-ons
  • Decorative Paper (e.g., scrapbook paper, paper napkins)
  • Coloured Brads and Fasteners
  • Rubber Stamps
  • Ink Pads
  • Tags
  • Ribbons
  • Washi Tape
  • Buttons

Keepsake Pockets/Envelopes

Consider adding pockets or envelopes to your journal. These are perfect for storing small items and ephemera collected during your travels. You can create them using coordinating cardstock or use actual envelopes, whether new or used.

Things to Include in Your Journal

Your travel journal should not only be a creative outlet but also a practical tool. Here are some essential elements to incorporate:

Planning Pages: Dedicate sections for itinerary, accommodation bookings, flight details, and car rental information. This will help you stay organised throughout your journey.

Emergency Contact Details: Always have a section for emergency contact information in case of unforeseen circumstances.

Pockets for Pre-Purchased Tickets: Create pockets to safely store pre-purchased tickets, such as museum passes or concert tickets.

Plastic Sleeves for Ephemera: Include plastic sleeves or pouches to safeguard the ephemera you collect along the way. These can be used for postcards, ticket stubs, or even dried flowers.

Your Contact Details: Just in case the unspeakable happens and you misplace your journal whilst out and about.

As you embark on your journey and start documenting your adventures in your handmade travel journal, remember that it's not just a diary; it's a piece of art that encapsulates your unique experiences. Your travel journal will become a treasured keepsake, allowing you to relive the joy, wonder, and beauty of your travels for years to come.

The Power of Recording Memories

On our last trip to Tassie to visit my sister I just sketched. We have been there so many times that we didn’t do any sightseeing this time and just hung around her property relaxing. It was nice sitting there on her deck and relaxing with a glass of wine, pencil in hand and my sketchbook ready to sketch the surrounding views. In just under 4 weeks, we are off on a family holiday to Queenstown, New Zealand. We are going with my son, his wife and our 2 grandchildren. This will be the grandkids first time in the snow, so we are really looking forward to it. It will be my first time in New Zealand so that is also exciting. New Zealand is such a beautiful place I just know I will be taking hundreds of photos. I also am really looking forward to sketching my own interpretation of these scenes. Unlike most other people, over the last couple of months I haven’t been planning what clothes to take or what must see tourist attractions to visit …. I have been planning and creating my travel journal and deciding what supplies to take. At this point in time, I have my journal and supplies all packed and ready to go. But I haven’t got one item of clothing organised. LOL I have spent weeks “auditioning” which of my watercolour paints to take. (At one point my hubby asked me if there was a prize for the supplies that won because I had literally spent hours swatching out colours and deciding which best suited the “theme” of our destination – cheeky bugger.) I didn’t want to take my entire range of watercolours as that only adds to the procrastination of creating art – do I use ultramarine blue or cobalt blue…. which shade of green should this be…. should I use burnt umber or burnt sienna? If you have limited supplies, you make do with what you have and just go for it. Well, that is what I have found over the years anyway. I have hand-made my travel journal using my favourite size format for creating on the go. It has a mixture of scrapbooking papers (for photos) and good quality watercolour paper for creating art. I will go into more detail on creating my travel journal and the final selection of supplies to take in my next post. But for now, here is a picture of the first page of my travel journal and some of the “winning” supplies. It’s nice to not have a completely blank journal to dive into when travelling. My next job is to pack all these so they are as portable as possible… Ensure that you register on my website or follow me on Facebook to stay updated on the real-time creation of my travel journal. This way, you won't miss out on any of my ongoing activities and adventures. FB: https://www.facebook.com/eaglereachstudio Website: https://eaglereachstudio.com.au
