Creative Block

Vicky Tailor • 14 July 2023

It happens to us all at some point in time.

I know every artist has this issue from time to time. What should I create today? When you are a mixed media artist, like me, you also have the drawback of trying to determine what supplies to use. I have been going through this block myself for the last few weeks.

I sat there wanting to create something but just can’t decide what to do. Because of that I can’t even decide what sort of background to create. Yes, I have followed my own advice and created a couple of backgrounds but they haven’t inspired me to go further at this point.

I have gone back through some old art journals to see if that prompts anything. But other than adding a few lines here and a bit of colour there….. nothing eventuated.

A couple of weeks ago I got out my backup journal – or should that be desperation journal…???? My Zentangle journal. [OK – a quick break here whilst I now go and apologise to my Zentangle journal for calling it “a desperation journal”. It really isn’t as I love Zentangling and now I might have upset it. It also has a companion journal that I have created which is full of Zentangle design inspiration so maybe that is 2 I have to apologise to…]

Well, now back to the problem at hand. Zentangling kept me happily entertained for a few days but it was still not fulfilling my deeper creative desire. The body content of your post goes here. Then earlier this week I remembered an artist friend of mine was running a 2-day workshop on how to draw unicorns. I have drawn horses before (and I love drawing horses) but always from a reference photo. This was going to be from my imagination with NO reference photos. I jumped right in and had a ball. My first horse looked a bit like a massive boofy-headed, horned thing and not the cute unicorn that I was going for. It was obvious that I had made the snout waaaayyy to long. But I did a few more and eventually created a couple of cute sketches that I was happy with.

Now the dam has opened, and I am on a mission to take those cute unicorn sketches and turn them into a fully coloured piece of artwork. Watch this space.

My lessons here were:

  • Try something different from what you normally do. For me it was not to use a reference photo.
  • Turn to another artist, creative, friend and gain inspiration from them.
  • Never stop learning.

Please go and check out Roxanne Milson Art at the Art Cave if you want to delve into the world of digital art, drawing horses or fantasy characters. She also has a free ebook on Getting Started in Digital Art that you can find on her website. I will be giving digital art a go at some point but more on that in another post.

If you want to know more about Zentangles and “Tangling” check out these 2 websites:

I hope you are enjoying a wildly creative time right now but if not, go and try something new. You never know where it will take you.

Happy arting

The Power of Recording Memories

On our last trip to Tassie to visit my sister I just sketched. We have been there so many times that we didn’t do any sightseeing this time and just hung around her property relaxing. It was nice sitting there on her deck and relaxing with a glass of wine, pencil in hand and my sketchbook ready to sketch the surrounding views. In just under 4 weeks, we are off on a family holiday to Queenstown, New Zealand. We are going with my son, his wife and our 2 grandchildren. This will be the grandkids first time in the snow, so we are really looking forward to it. It will be my first time in New Zealand so that is also exciting. New Zealand is such a beautiful place I just know I will be taking hundreds of photos. I also am really looking forward to sketching my own interpretation of these scenes. Unlike most other people, over the last couple of months I haven’t been planning what clothes to take or what must see tourist attractions to visit …. I have been planning and creating my travel journal and deciding what supplies to take. At this point in time, I have my journal and supplies all packed and ready to go. But I haven’t got one item of clothing organised. LOL I have spent weeks “auditioning” which of my watercolour paints to take. (At one point my hubby asked me if there was a prize for the supplies that won because I had literally spent hours swatching out colours and deciding which best suited the “theme” of our destination – cheeky bugger.) I didn’t want to take my entire range of watercolours as that only adds to the procrastination of creating art – do I use ultramarine blue or cobalt blue…. which shade of green should this be…. should I use burnt umber or burnt sienna? If you have limited supplies, you make do with what you have and just go for it. Well, that is what I have found over the years anyway. I have hand-made my travel journal using my favourite size format for creating on the go. It has a mixture of scrapbooking papers (for photos) and good quality watercolour paper for creating art. I will go into more detail on creating my travel journal and the final selection of supplies to take in my next post. But for now, here is a picture of the first page of my travel journal and some of the “winning” supplies. It’s nice to not have a completely blank journal to dive into when travelling. My next job is to pack all these so they are as portable as possible… Ensure that you register on my website or follow me on Facebook to stay updated on the real-time creation of my travel journal. This way, you won't miss out on any of my ongoing activities and adventures. FB: https://www.facebook.com/eaglereachstudio Website: https://eaglereachstudio.com.au
